Assessment of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) interventions in Kumudavathi Basin, Karnataka, India

International Association for Human Values (IAHV), sister organisation of the Art of Living (AOL) Foundation; with an objective of resuming the flow in Kumudavathi river has embarked upon a program of River Rejuvenation through managed aquifer recharge involving few interventions like:

•Increasing soil moisture

•Recharging phreatic aquifer

•Injection to semiconfined aquifers

Towards assessing the impact of MAR, detailed baseline information has been developed for the mini watersheds identified by IAHV. MAR activities in the Kumudavathi Basins have been studied keeping in view the following:

Site Suitability – intended purpose of augmented groundwater recharge and increasing the soil moisture.

Availability of Water – Runoff available for recharge. The total average of runoff volume has been arrived at 7.32 MCM. The study of land use changes and the rainfall pattern over different micro-watersheds and the run off potential at injection well indicates that source for the MAR is available.

Economic Viability and Community involvement – Community participation and the land selected for the MAR activities have been studied. As the interventions on common land, i.e., the stream beds avoiding conflicts between community and other stakeholders; MAR has been successful
